On My Desk...Saturday...Sketch Challenge (Take 2)

i'm lovin' the takes from those playing along with the Sketch Challenge

and thought i would come up with another take on it.

i was playing around in my art studio last night & today

(working on some layouts for Scrapping Frenzy store here in Mobile, Alabama) 

and voila...take 2 on the Sketch Challenge...

Inspiration Wednesday..."alter it up" with Simple Stories!

it's been awhile since i made an altered project but one of the projects for the Memory Works design team members was to create an "out-of-the-box" altered project using the Simple Stories "Life Documented" kit.

i started working on this project before i moved, put it away, and about a week ago i added the finishing touches to it.

basically, it's an unfinished wood shadow box purchased from Hobby Lobby.

i stash up on different styles of unfinished wood when it's 50% off ;-)

1) i used masking tape to cover the the edges around the glass and added with a paint brush 1-2 coats of  Liquitex acrylic paint.  i prefer Liquitex or Golden acrylic paints because they are better quality & the water content content is minimal.  plus, they dry quicker & have a better pigment than cheaper paints.  allow the paint to dry completely.  then, i pre-measured all my strips of Simple Stories Life Documented papers and vintage dictionary paper (ripped from an old dictionary).  i used Mod Podge to adhere all the papers to the box.  allow to dry completely.  then, i used a sanding tool/sandpaper to rough the edges.  as a finishing touch, i used Triple Thick Glaze by DecoArt + foam brush to add a "glazed" effect to the papers and also to seal the papers from peeling up.  once all was dry, i added the rubons to the front of the glass as shown.

2) i checked out the doll house furniture aisle in Hobby Lobby & found the TV and cake to add in as 3D embellishments.  i always like to check out not just the scrapbooking section in the store but other aisles that open lots of out-of-the-box possibilities for projects.  inside the box, below, you will see i added all the fun touches to represent my family - my dad (who passed away in 2005), my mom, my older sis, and myself.  again, i pre-cut everything ahead of time (including the swirl transparency) and added them inside the box.

note:  tv was one of my dad's favorite, so it was a must add to the project. 

the tool wrench/saw is from my older scrap stash of Karen Foster products but was the perfect touch for my dad's cubby hole in this box because he was a man of many tools and loved working in his shop.

the cake was the perfect touch as well because my mom is an EXCELLENT cook &baker & she loves to bake cakes.

this is a cool piece to give as a gift, add to your home decor hinged on a scrolled easel on a shelf/table.

so, as you can see a very cool "out-of-the-box" use of the Simple Stories kits.
